How to Send Twilio SMS Notifications from WooCommerce (Step by Step)

In this article we are going to show you how to add Twilio SMS notifications from your WooCommerce online store.

Why add SMS notifications to WooCommerce?

SMS notifications are the best way to give your customers information about their orders. Text messages are very personal and are usually viewed and opened within seconds of being received.

You can use SMS notifications to notify your WooCommerce buyers of their orders. They can also provide special coupon codes to encourage shoppers to re-shop.

SMS notifications give you creative ways to stay in touch with your customers and add value.

Step 1. Set up your Twilio SMS account

The first thing you need is a Twilio account.

Twilio is an online service that offers phone, voice messaging, and SMS services that you can use with applications such as WordPress and WooCommerce.

You can use the free trial version to set up your account and experiment with the service. You pay $ 0.0075 per message sent, with bulk messaging rates available.

First, visit the Twilio website and sign up for the free trial.

On the login page you will be asked to enter your personal information.

You will then need to check your email address and phone number.

After that, select the products that you want to use. In this case it is “SMS” and “Alerts & Notifications”.

Then select the option ‘With minimal code’ and below that ‘PHP’.

Once you have entered your details, click on “Get started with Twilio”.

After signing up for an account, you will be redirected to the Twilio dashboard. You will need to click the Get First Twilio Number button to get a phone number for your account.

A popup will appear that contains your new number.

If you like the number, click “Pick this number” to keep it.

This screen will also list your account SID, authentication token, and new Twilio number.

You’ll need this information later, so keep this tab open.

Step 2. Install and activate Uncanny Automator

To send SMS messages from WooCommerce we use an automation plugin.

The best WordPress automation plugin is Uncanny Automator. It acts as a bridge between different WordPress plugins and applications and lets them communicate with each other.

Step 3. Create an SMS notification using Uncanny Automator

Once Uncanny Automator is activated and set up, you can add a WooCommerce SMS notification.

First of all, you need to link your Twilio account to the Uncanny Automator plugin.

To do this, navigate to Automator »Settings. Then click on the ‘Twilio’ option.

Enter your account SID, authentication token, and Twilio number here.

Then click “Save API Details”.

You can now set up a notification. When a user places an order in WooCommerce, an SMS message is automatically sent to them.

To do this, navigate to Automator »Add new. You will then be asked to select “Registered” or “Anonymous”.

We choose “Anonymous” so that all users will receive an SMS notification, even if they check out with a guest account.

Next, you can give your recipe a name.

Then select the “WooCommerce” option in the “Anonymous trigger” meta field.

Now you can choose your trigger.

We are going to use the first option as they are all related to purchasing WooCommerce.

Next, choose the trigger condition.

Select Completed from the drop-down menu to trigger the automation when a customer completes a purchase. Then click on “Save”.

Once you do that, you can choose a specific product or any product in your store.

To select all of the products in your store, select the Any Product option and then click the Save button.

The Automator will now save your trigger and you can proceed to the Actions section. Depending on whether you select anonymous or registered recipes, different options are displayed.

Since we have selected an anonymous recipe, there is an option to perform the action on an existing user or a new user.

Click on “New User” to continue.

With Automator you can now specify the user data that you want to use.

You need to click the asterisk next to each field and select the appropriate WooCommerce field. For example, we use ‘Billing First Name’ for the ‘First Name’ field.

Below you can see the setting of the user role and what to do if the user already exists. You can choose Subscribers as the user role and Do nothing for existing users.

Then click the “Save” button to continue.

Once saved, click the “Add Action” button and select the “Twilio” integration.

Select “Send SMS to a number” from the drop-down menu.

A new field will appear where you can add the address and text of your text message.

In the “To” field, click the “Asterisk” button and select “Billing Phone” from the drop-down list.

You can then customize the text message content that you want to send to your customers. By clicking on the asterisk you can add data from your order, e.g. B. the name of the product, the city, the total price and much more.

When you are satisfied with your message, click “Save”.

You can now view the full action summary.

You can then activate this recipe.

At the top of the editor in the “Recipe” field, you can toggle the “Draft” switch to “Live”.

Your new recipe is now active and you will automatically send Twilio SMS notifications to your customers as soon as they have completed a purchase in WooCommerce.

Make sure to test your workflow to see if the recipe is triggered and the correct action is being taken.
